This is the story of how I came to know the Lord Jesus as my Savior. I was born into a Catholic family in the country of Hungary, which was then under communist control. Although in my early years I went to catechism, and was even an altar boy, I believed in evolution, because that was what was both espoused and propagated by communist regimes. By the grace of God, we moved to Canada in 1969. In 1978, my wife took our two daughters to Sunday School. The first time my wife heard the gospel, she trusted Christ and was saved by the grace of God. Immediately, I saw a change in her. I was so impressed that I went with her to meetings. At the time, I was still involved with fencing, being a 2-time Canadian champion and an Olympian, so I was not always available on Lords days. My wife, however, did not give up on me but continued to read the Bible to me. I felt that I was a good person and was not a criminal. So why would I need salvation? As time went on, and I continued listening to the gospel, I started to realize that I was the one to whom Gods gospel message was directed. I did not meet Gods standard because "all have sinned and come short of the glory of God." On one occasion, when we went to the zoo, my wife pointed to the monkeys and said, "If you believe in evolution, there are your brothers and sisters." Not long after that, I began having severe chest pains. Having heard the gospel a number of times, I knew that if I died in my sins I would be in hell and in everlasting fire. I began to think seriously about eternity. At Christmas time in 1980, I realized that the work of the Lord Jesus on the cross was the only way to heaven. I trusted Him and He saved me by His grace.
I had to travel thousands of kilometers to find salvation. You can find it even as you read these words if you will trust the Son of God as your Savior. "The Word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the Word of faith, which we preach; that if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation" (Romans 10:8-10). "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved" (Acts 16:31).
